What is a UPS?
An uninterruptible power supply, also called a UPS system or UPS battery backup, saves connected equipment from power dropping problems and provides battery backup power during electrical outages and abnormal voltage fluctuations. All UPS systems perform two critical functions: provide battery backup power and protect equipment from power surges and line noise interference.

There are three main types of UPSs: Offline, Online, and Line Interactive.

- Offline UPS
The Standby UPS, “Offline UPS” or a “Standby Power Supply” is the most simplistic and cheaper version of the UPS. Essentially, this type of UPS will work on power directly from the wall socket to the power supply of the computer until a power outage. Once the power shuts down, the UPS will switch to using its internal battery to power the attached device. The biggest problem with this version is that the UPS waits until it detects that no power is coming from the wall before it switches to battery power. It is possible in that short amount of time, called the “switch time” or “transfer time”, that the computer that is connected to it might not be able to run without obstruction. This could cause the loss of vital unsaved data.
- Online UPS
Online UPSs are sometimes called “True UPS”. These are similar to Standby UPSs with some significant differences as well. In an Online UPS, the power comes from the battery of the UPS itself and the power from the wall is constantly recharging the battery. It is similar to using a laptop while it is plugged in. If the power goes out, it will keep running until the battery dies. There is no “transfer time” that leads to loss of power and there is another level of protection from any surges or drops in voltage coming off the wall power. So there is no tension of potential damage to the computer.
- Line Interactive
Line Interactive UPSs are different from the Offline or Online versions we already discussed. In a Line Interactive UPS, the power from the wall streams into the Inverter/Converter in the UPS. The power is then divided into both AC and DC current. The DC charges the battery of the UPS and the AC flows to the power supply of the computer. When power is missed to the wall, the computer gets all of its power from the battery in the UPS. Line Interactive UPSs do still have transfer time when power is lost, but it is a faster response than in Offline Models.

Most UPS systems have built-in USB, serial, and contact closure communication ports. These enable power management, additional surge protection to connected peripherals, and automatic unattended shutdown; systems will power off when not in use for a certain period of time.

An LCD screen may enable access to the advanced features of the UPS system without a computer. It can show helpful information like input voltage or battery capacity. The LCD commonly has a backlight, make sure you can dim the backlight to minimize distractions in darkened settings.
More power that is flowing through the UPS will create more heat to build up, which could shorten the life of the UPS. It could fail, or even cause harm to the systems. Larger UPS systems generally have built-in cooling fans, These fans help to keep the UPS cool and run optimally.
