Installing a UPS in Harsh Enviornment

Installing a UPS monitoring system in harsh environments can be difficult to say the least. A UPS, or uninterrupted power supply, needs suitable environmental conditions to function without issues. The majority of UPS systems require a stable indoor environment to properly function. But this doesn’t mean that those with harsh conditions or external applications cannot install a UPS. Before we get into how to make a UPS work in harsh environments, here are a few factors that one should keep in mind-


Ideally, the UPS should have 500mm clearance all round to dissipate heat effectively, but, many UPS system can safely operate in tighter spaces.

When sued in a normal environment, UPS system is always running, which draws a constant flow of air through it. In a dusty area, this can stop being the case, as the UPS can become filled with dust. Some come with dust filters as standards, but if it require a specific UPS, then most can be fitted with these as an extra.


Some harsh environment have the additional hazard of moisture in the air. As the UPS is constantly pulling air through it, this poses a risk to the electrical components in side. In this case we have two options to ensure or request the one we need to be. This is where a protective chemical coating is applied to the circuit board. This will protect the components from any moisture that is brought In with the air. Secondly, the essentials if the environment is particular wet, is the options to use an IP65 rated UPS. This will often include conform coating, but the external case will also be design and seal to prevent any water from entering at all.


While it is important for a UPS not to overheat, it is even more essential that batteries are stored at the correct temperature. If battery temperature fluctuates it can affect the efficiency and lifespan of the UPS batteries. The solution to this is space is lacking in the install environment, is to store the batteries separately the UPS, in a room that is subjects to temperature control.
