VRLA Battery or value-regulated lead acid battery commonly known as Sealed Lead Acid Battery is a type of lead acid battery that is characterized by a limited amount of electrolyte absorbed in a plate separator or formed into a gel, proportioning of the negative and positive plates so that oxygen recombination is facilitated within the cells and the presence of the relief valve that retains the battery contents independent of the position of the cells.
There are two main types of VRLA batteries:-
- ABSORBENT GLASS MAT (AGM)
- GEL CELL (GEL BATTERY)
- ABSORBENT GLASS MAT:-
An AGM, absorbent glass mat battery contains a special glass mat separator that wicks the electrolyte solutions between the battery plates. This materials design enables the fiberglass to be saturated with the electrolyte and to store the electrolyte in a “dry” or suspended state rather than in free liquid form.
AGM technology became popular in the early 1980s as a sealed lead acid battery for military aircraft, vehicles and UPS to reduce weight and improve reliability. The sulfuric acid is absorbed by a very fine fiberglass mat, making the battery spill-proof.
Characteristics of ABSORBENT GLASS MAT BATTERIES:
While a popular choice for deep cycling, as an AGM battery has a depth of discharge (DOD) of 80% verses a standard flooded battery which has a DOD OF 50%. It is also a popular choice for starter batteries. This is because it has a low internal resistance and can provide high current loads quickly.
Are AGM batteries are spillproof?
Similar to how water creeps up a towel when it is put in a bathtub. This capillary actions holds the liquid inside then glass matting, making the AGM battery “spill proof”, if it is ever exposed. Due to the tight packing of an AGM battery, it is also the most impact resistance and boast the least internal resistance.
- GEL CELL (GEL BATTERY):-
A gel battery or gel cell battery is a VRLA battery with a jellified electrolyte, the sulfuric acid mixed with silica fume, which makes the resulting mass gel-like and immobile. Unlike a flooded wet-cell lead-acid battery, these batteries do not need to be kept upright.
VRLA stands for Valve-Regulated Lead Acid and it is the designation for low maintenance lead acid is rechargeable batteries. Because of their construction, VRLA batteries do not require regular addition of water to the cell.
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GEL CELL BATTERIES?
The VRLA batteries are leak proof and will not leak even if the container is cracked or broken. In these sealed lead acid batteries, a glass mat separator absorbs the electrolyte and hold it between the lead plates. Because the acid electrolyte is held by the mat, the battery will not leak or spill.
ADVANATGES OF GEL CELL BATTERIES:-
Best suited for deep cycle applications and their life is generally in the 500 to 5000 cycles range. It is maintenance free. It is spill proof. Minimal corrosion therefore compatible with sensitive electronic equipment’s. Gel cell batteries are commonly used in cell phones, camcorders, motorcycles and marine equipment’s. It is also used in high-end cars. Because of its low maintenance feature, users do not have to regularly add water to the battery in making sure that the electrolyte levels are normal. These batteries can be installed anywhere. Gel batteries have the advantages of being able to be used in virtually any position, because they don’t leak and are generally maintenance free. This greatly increase the number of applications that gel batteries can be used for.
