Main Components Of Online UPS And How It Works

Online ups system are often called ‘double conversion’ types because incoming power is converted once to DC, for the battery, and then back to AC before reaching the load which is therefore well-insulated from the mains.

Difference between an online UPS and offline UPS:-

The key difference between Online UPS and Offline UPS lies in their work. An Online UPS supplies the AC power through a rectifier and inverter circuit even when the AC mains power is available. On the contrary, the offline ups directly supply the AC mains power to the load circuit when the power supply is available.

Components of online UPS

There are four main components in any online double conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system: Rectifier; UPS Batteries; Inverter; and Static Bypass Switch.

  • Rectifier: –

A rectifier is an electronic device that converts an alternating current into a direct current by using one or more P-N junction diodes. A diode behaves as a one-way valve that allows current to flow in a single direction. This process is known as rectification. A rectifier is an electrical device used to convert alternating current and AC into direct current DC by allowing a current to flow through the device in one direction only.

  • UPS batteries: –

There are three main types of batteries used in uninterruptible power supplies: Nickel-Cadmium, Lead-Acid, and Lithium-Ion. There isn’t a single β€œbest” UPS battery technology – the choice should be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Inverter: –

Inverters are also called AC Drives, or VFD (variable frequency drive). They are electronic devices that can turn DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current). It is also responsible for controlling speed and torque for electric motors.

  • Static bypass: –

A static bypass switch automatically and instantaneously transfers the load to the mains electricity supply when there’s an internal fault or failure with the UPS system. It is a common characteristic of an Online UPS.
